Sometimes Its Just a Windmill: Reclaiming Objective Truth in Christ

Have you ever tried to have a conversation about politics, faith, education, or even something as basic as gender with someone who holds a different view? Since around 2020 it has often felt as though there is almost no common ground left to stand on. Discussions quickly devolve into stalemates over semantics rather than leading to any meaningful resolution. Yet the problem did not begin in 2020. The divergence between facts-based truth and “lived experience” or “individual truth” has been widening ever since post-modernism took root. And post-modernism itself did not appear out of nowhere. It is the latest chapter in an ancient lie that has been creeping into human hearts and minds since the first man and woman walked the earth.As a young man coming of age in the 1990s and entering early adulthood in the early 2000s, I watched this philosophy bloom into the monstrous, all-consuming machine it has become today. Now, as I raise my own younger children in the midst of this cacophony of lies, my prayer is that books like this one—and other faithful voices in media, film, music, and streaming—will help turn the tide. May they help many jump ship from the burning hull of post-modernism and onto something real and stable: Christ, the steady Rock of our salvation.Here, then, is the book’s central analogy: post-modernism’s proud insistence that “you define your own truth” is Don Quixote 2.0—only the windmills have been upgraded. Biology, history, language, even the Bible itself have been rechristened as giants that must be charged and toppled. The knight-errant has traded his pasteboard helmet and bony nag for a ring light, a smartphone, and an audience of millions ready to affirm every thrust of the lance. We must therefore turn to Christ, the author of truth and our reality itself to return back to reason. Read more
